Economics. She is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Management
Department and Co-Vice President of Alumni Relations in the MBA student

Celebrate RU’s 100th Birthday on Charter Day
Radford University will celebrate
the 100th anniversary of the signing of its charter with a day full of
festivities on March 24 that will serve as the pinnacle event of the
university’s year-long Centennial celebration.

RU to Welcome Inaugural Class of Doctor of Nursing Practice Students
Radford University
will welcome its inaugural class of Doctor of Nursing Practice students in fall
2010. This program will allow individuals with bachelor’s degrees and/or
master’s degrees in nursing to continue their education and will prepare them as
advanced practice nurses.

events coinciding with the university's Centennial Year Celebration. The opening

Gerald '09 is eagerly awaiting the inevitable arrival of spring. As the
volunteer co-director of the City of Radford's community garden, she is
combining her MBA skills and a desire to make a contribution to her community.

Alumni's Project Shines New Light
Everybody knows the
joke asking how many people does it take to change a light bulb. Radford
University alumnus Nick Quitter, '08, MBA '09, not only learned how to change
the bulbs, but he can tell you where they are and recommend the best kind of
bulb to use that will minimize CO2 emissions and costs.
Merging his lifelong interest in lighting and electricity, a desire to do a
meaningful applied research project as part of his MBA program and an abiding
interest in the environment and sustainability, the recently-minted MBA
inventoried RU's lighting needs and created an Excel-based tool or calculator to
help facility managers make informed, sustainable lighting and energy use

RU Students Present to Appalachian Regional Commission
Radford University
begins a new decade with a celebration of its past 10 decades. This spring, RU
turns 100. The emphasis is on service and rightfully so. The school has a rich
tradition of graduating students who go into a myriad of professional services,
many of which benefit their own communities. Students enrolled in RU's Research
in Appalachia, APST 495/595 classes, are proud to be a part of the legacy of
service and, as part of RU's Appalachian Regional Studies Center's commitment to
service, five students recently presented to the Appalachian Regional Commission

Master of Science in Math Education Welcomes Its First Students
The Master of
Science in Education with a concentration in mathematics education program is
welcoming its first cohort of students. This program is the only one of its
kind in the Commonwealth. Approximately 20 students begin the program in
fall 2009. They hail from areas across Southwestern Virginia including
Henry, Russell, Grayson and Wise Counties in addition to Roanoke and Radford
Cities.
“This program
is designed to enhance secondary mathematics teachers’ knowledge for teaching
while providing the mathematical content preparation required for teaching at a
two– or four– year college,” says mathematics education coordinator Laura
Spielman.
The first
class will be taught using distance education technology with students located
on RU’s main campus, Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, New College
Institute and Roanoke Higher Education Center.

Waldron College Hires Administrators
for New Doctoral Degree Programs
Edward C.
Swanson, Ph.D., M.B.A., PT has been appointed as director of Radford
University's Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. He will be responsible for
developing and implementing the new program. Renee Huth, P.T., D.P.T., has been
appointed as director of clinical education. Her role at RU is to develop and
manage the clinical education aspect of the curriculum including obtaining
contracts with local physical therapy practices. Additional

MOT Program Receives Developing Program Status, Admits First Class of
Students
RU's Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program, designed to be the first of
its kind in the Commonwealth to focus on rural healthcare, has received
Developing Program Status from the Accreditation Council for Occupational
Therapy Education and will begin admitting its first class of students to start
this fall.

for Second Straight Year by The Princeton Review
Radford
University has again been named to the "best colleges and universities in the
Southeast" list, according to The Princeton Review. "The validation of quality

Radford University Offers Doctoral Degree in Counseling Psychology
Radford
University offers a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Counseling Psychology with
a focus on rural mental health and additional emphases on cultural diversity,
social justice, and evidence-based practice in psychology. The Psy.D. degree in
Counseling Psychology is designed for persons interested in careers as
psychologists in mental health settings and institutions where clinical
supervision and the direct application of counseling, therapy, and psychological
